The aggressive episodes are not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition (e.g., head trauma, Alzheimer’s disease).
The aggressive episodes may take the form of "spells" or "attacks," with symptoms beginning minutes to hours before the actual acting-out.
Later the individual may feel upset, remorseful, regretful, or embarrassed about the aggressive behavior.

People who suffer from anxiety, mood disorders, alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional/mental abuse and other mental health personality disorders are at risk for developing IED.
